Christmas again...really???

What a year this has been!  So when we last spoke I had been a stay at home mom / consultant for seven days and just had a blast at my great Gatsby themed party.   Life was fun but also about to change a lot.   See after about 130 interviews, ok, only 13, I got my dream job at a bank.   This bank is also based in Sandton, so I do end up spending a lot of time in my lovely new automatic mini cooper S, the really fast one, the one that goes WROOOOOOOM when you press the ‘s’ button.    No more gym in the middle of the day, no more coffee dates and play dates and the like... more meetings, more work and I love it.  On the kid front, Luka is a real sweetie now and we are definitely keeping her.   She is in love with Princess Elsa, she lives and breathes that blue ice princess, she sings “Let it go” from the top of her lungs day and night – that and the SA national anthem.   She wears her Princess Elsa dress day and night and her current major insult is telling some

The life and times of a regular stay at home mom

I have been unemployed for seven days.   Gerhard says I must stop telling people that I am unemployed, I am a consultant.   Well same thing.   I no longer have a formal place of work to go to every day.   My hours are generally more flexible and a couple of things have changed in my life.   1.        Yes, I have become one of the people dropping my kids off at school in gym clothes, no make-up, ponytail or sometimes even worse, a braid.   No wonder nobody greets me anymore on the school run, they probably don’t recognize me; 2.        I go to gym seven times a week now, it’s either that or shopping, or eating, neither too appealing; 3.        I wear flat shoes quite often, rather strange to look at the world from such a low angle.   And it was raining a lot here the past couple of weeks, so my toes are generally wet; 4.        I only have a bath at around noon, yes, after the morning gym session and a couple of errands, before I know it the day is pretty m

The Ballad of Lucy Jordan

WE had a rather uneventful weekend, after quite a hectic start to the year 2014, we decided to just have a quiet one at home and it was lovely!   So yesterday I literally popped out to the shops for all of half an hour, sure thing, Barney Simon plays his long lost classics on Jacaranda FM and I get all teary when that Marianne Faithfull classic, the Ballad of Lucy Jordan starts playing. This in a week where Sheryl Crow turned 50 and Jennifer Aniston turned 45… You see, I have a rather significant birthday coming up, yes, I am turning 37 in less than two weeks, and all of a sudden I wonder when I got to be so old… and as the poor Lucy Jordan, I too realised I have not driven through Paris in a sports car with the warm wind in my hair (Lucy Jordan also wants to ride, I want to drive, what a difference from the late seventies to the now).   And that really got me thinking, when we are in our twenties, we seem to believe with one hundred percent conviction that we are bullet proof

Ready set here we go again

Cliché, but what happened to my December break, it’s done and dusted and we are already one week into 2014.  Our holiday was amazing, we spent two weeks at the coast and a week in the bush, we are all tanned, rested, a bit fatter than we were three weeks ago, but it was worth every calorie laden vodka along the way. I think that Liam finally realises that Santa Claus does not exist as he started asking piercing questions and we basically lied to him, and then he walked into my study yesterday and saw the wrapping paper, and I fobbed him off with a story about Santa and me just all buying paper at Checkers.  Gerhard decided to have a man to man talk to the poor boy to explain that we lied, but also to beg Liam to now join us in the on-going deceit of Luka.  We will see how this turns out.  Santa – i.e. Gerhard and I got Liam a fishing rod and “a tackle” and a tent for Christmas, a miracle really when considering that we still do not own a Wii or a PlayStation or any other TV ga
