Christmas again...really???

What a year this has been!

So when we last spoke I had been a stay at home mom / consultant for seven days and just had a blast at my great Gatsby themed party.  Life was fun but also about to change a lot.  See after about 130 interviews, ok, only 13, I got my dream job at a bank.  This bank is also based in Sandton, so I do end up spending a lot of time in my lovely new automatic mini cooper S, the really fast one, the one that goes WROOOOOOOM when you press the ‘s’ button.

No more gym in the middle of the day, no more coffee dates and play dates and the like... more meetings, more work and I love it.

On the kid front, Luka is a real sweetie now and we are definitely keeping her.  She is in love with Princess Elsa, she lives and breathes that blue ice princess, she sings “Let it go” from the top of her lungs day and night – that and the SA national anthem.  She wears her Princess Elsa dress day and night and her current major insult is telling someone that their hair is short and that they are not a princess.  She is three years old and she has a bit of an existential crisis going in the fact that she is both painfully shy and a born performer at the same time.  A real girl who loves make up, nail polish and having her hair braided in the fishtail fashion like friggen Princess Elsa.

Liam, oh Liam, the child of all eternity.  He cares about others, he genuinely does.  He loves playing rugby and has a scrum cap that he wears regularly.  He wants to be a rugby player or a soccer player when he grows up.  He has finally given up on women realising that at the ripe old age of six, he is probably too
young to get married.  He loves fishing and is obsessed with sports.  He can often be found in the park close to home with a rugby ball, a soccer ball, a cricket bat, a hockey stick and a bike.  He plays whatever is being played in the park at that stage.  He has learned to read and write a little bit and when I return home from London we need to go and buy him a school uniform.  Where did the time go.  When did this precious baby turn into a slightly smelly all knees and knuckles little boy?

All I can say is that life is pretty good and that despite this being a busy and challenging year we are all doing very well.  We are all healthy and happy and winding down.  We are counting the Mondays until Christmas and we are almost packing our bags for Mozambique.

I love South Africa and our life there, but man oh man the English know how to do winter.  It is absolutely stunning here and the Christmas decorations are breathtaking.  There is sparkle and joy around every corner and chestnuts roasting on open fires.  There is just something a tad sad about a Santa Clause sweating in a read woolen suit back in South Africa.  I wish that we had a proper winter that merits woolen coats and mittens, we only have dreary dry Highveld and it is not really that cold.  The coffee shops start to sell Christmas cheer in cups that look like Santa.  Cups full of brownie lattes, hazelnut and caramel lattes, ginger bread and orange hot chocolate.  Maybe on second thought it is a good thing that South Africans do not know how to winter as I would gain more than a couple of kilograms.  So for now I will count myself lucky that I get to come and see this a couple of times a year.

So here we go yet again, countdown to Christmas, new year, new school.  Love from London x

Tinsel and all that glitters

And so the 1 st of December happened and we put up a tree.  A very simple version of a story that is just a tad longer… As in the past, I decided not to put up a tree at home as we leave for our annual beach holiday soon in any event.  Well after seeing trees, baubles, glitter and what not on Facebook, I felt extremely guilty for denying my kids the pleasure of Christmas for two whole weeks whilst my virtual friends’ kids were all rolling in the tinsel.  So I decided to put up the tree after all, how lazy can one person be.  Out came the box and the tree and the lights and horror of horrors, we are missing a leg.  So Luka and I went to the mall last night and got a new tree, a bigger tree and more sparkly things than we need.  If it says Christmas, and if it even has a hint of glitter, we have it, we even have fairy lights running up our balustrade, we have baubles and glitter and advent calendars, I really went to town on this one.  It i...

Luka is 6 weeks old, and sleeping in her own room

A breakthrough, at last... 2 Nights ago I was ready to sell Luka.  I told Gerhard that I do not for the life of me understand why we decided to have a second baby.  I was absolutely shattered, telling him I hate maternity leave and I cannot wait to go back to work.  I told him that I am counting days  until the 1st of August when Luka can start school.  Not nice, I know, but I also told Gerhard that I do love her, I just wish she was bigger. This is the result of not sleeping for 6 weeks - and add to the mix the fact that Luka got a severe cold and was not sleeping at all for 2 nights in a row.  Man oh man was I in a deep and twisted frame of mind... Well, today is my 6 week check-up, I feel like a new person, you see Luka moved to her own room last night.  Yes, it might seem cruel, but we probably squeezed another 2 hours worth of sleep out of her last night, all due to the fact that we did not listed to her grunting and farting.  We have a...

Liam's first day at the new school

We have been preparing Liam for his first day at the new school for the past three weeks, so much in fact that he told me the day before yesterday that Teacher Hannetjie is going to love him to bits.  Cute, just slightly weird considering that he met Teacher Hannetjie for the first time the day after making this bold statement. This morning he got up all excited and told me that today is the day.  He got slightly less brave as the time for leaving came closer.  When we reached the school and he saw the kids were not playing outside (I must point out that the temperature was -1 degrees Celsius at that stage, he got a bit teary.  Thank heavens for teachers like Teacher Hannetjie, she comforted him and included him immediately, so here is to hoping that Liam will have an ok first day at the new school. Last night I told him that I simply cannot believe that he is turning three, and going to big boy school.  I told him there is a lump in my throat, his reply, ...
