Liam the Rocker

One of the perks of my job is that I am able to work from home once in a blue moon, this of course means the world to Liam and Luka as I can pick them up from school and they don't have to walk the entire 600 meters home.

Today is again a work from home day, I was supposed to accompany the chairman on a lunch meeting.  I had a leisurely housewife start to the day by going to Crossfit at 6am instead of the normal 5am and after dropping Luka at her school's holiday programme, I spent a couple of hours working in my gym clothes, then had a bath, washed and blow dried my hair, put on make up, a suit, and as I was about to leave the house my meeting was cancelled.  So here I am sitting in my study all alone, all dressed up with nowhere to go, anyhow, I digress.

Liam is always the kid that goes to movies and out for pizza with other kids and their moms, I love these people, yesterday was no exception and a good friend took Liam along to movies and pizza.  Seeing the opportunity to at least try and be a half cool mom to my kid I took Liam and his buddy Reuben to McDonalds.

Oh my, how very entertaining.  Liam told us last night that Reuben's mom only listens to really cool rap music.  He made us search for a song called "Earthquake" - its a song by DJ Fresh v Diplo Featuring Dominique Young Unique, I think.  To put it in perspective, Gerhard, Liam and Luka love old school rock, I share their love for this, put I also enjoy a bit of pop, don't tell, don't judge but I even have a Justin Bieber song on my playlist now...

So Liam and Rueben get into the car, a mini, same as Reuben's mom and we go through a part by part comparison, Reuben's mom's car and my car are pretty equal because the fact that hers is bigger evens out with mine being able to take the top down, boys will be boys and all!  Liam then says lets play Reuben some of my favorite music, lets play Queen.  Liam gave the poor kid a blow by blow breakdown of Queen, Freddy Mercury, the legends, the fact that they were top of the charts for years and years, we started off by listening to "Another one bites the dust" followed by "Bohemian Rhapsody" all the time receiving live commentary.  "Listen to this part Reuben, this is the really good bit" and poor Reuben just sat there waiting for the rap to start.  Liam's explanation of "Bohemian Rhapsody" is actually rather amusing as he indicates that "it starts of lame, goes into pop, rock, lame and then rock again".

So to all the mothers of Liam's friends out there, please explain to your kids that there are some children like Liam who really enjoy older music, he will be that kid, the one listening to Queen, AC/DC, Metallica, it seems odd, but he just loves it, and he is such a genuine kid, he really thinks that this is the best music ever written.  Even watching these weirdly dressed old rockers with their thinning tresses, leather pants, paunches, he still thinks that they rock.  He also enjoys a bit of Rodriquez from time to time and he cringes when I play my one (yes only one I promise) Justin Bieber song.  Please don't judge him too harshly by what he listens to as we his parents take full responsibility for our actions.  I mostly blame Gerhard.

He proudly tells his friends that when he was still in my tummy, Gerhard and I played rock music to him and he happily kicked along, 100% true, I could not stop listening to "Live" when I was expecting Liam.  Thank goodness this was before Justin Bieber was born, or Liam would probably have been given serious grief by his friends in a couple of years' time.

Liam, you can be so glad that you were born in the year 2008, because when we were growing up, AC/DC was banned, because a village idiot called Rodney Seale, who looked like an old rocker who had bad plastic surgery came to our schools and sold books to our unsuspecting Calvinistic parents telling them that AC/DC was actually code for "After Christ, Devil Comes".  We were told that if you played some of these songs backwards and listened to the lyrics, you would hear the Satanistic messages recorded.  Now Liam, in mommy's days we had to listen to music on tapes.  Mommy tried absolutely every trick under the sun and there is just no friggen way that you can play a tape backwards.  So I never quite got all the hidden messages.  I always wondered about the meaning of songs like "You shook me all night long" and I can see you battling with some of these concepts yourself.  My only word of advise, in this day and age, is to not become a Belieber ok.  Lots of love.  Mom

Tinsel and all that glitters

And so the 1 st of December happened and we put up a tree.  A very simple version of a story that is just a tad longer… As in the past, I decided not to put up a tree at home as we leave for our annual beach holiday soon in any event.  Well after seeing trees, baubles, glitter and what not on Facebook, I felt extremely guilty for denying my kids the pleasure of Christmas for two whole weeks whilst my virtual friends’ kids were all rolling in the tinsel.  So I decided to put up the tree after all, how lazy can one person be.  Out came the box and the tree and the lights and horror of horrors, we are missing a leg.  So Luka and I went to the mall last night and got a new tree, a bigger tree and more sparkly things than we need.  If it says Christmas, and if it even has a hint of glitter, we have it, we even have fairy lights running up our balustrade, we have baubles and glitter and advent calendars, I really went to town on this one.  It i...

The state of the world we live in

Before having kids, I used to read newspapers and watch the news on TV all the time.   My current affairs were really very up to date and I knew the names of most heads of state and had insights into the economies of several states.   After having kids I know the names of all the teletubbies, I know the words to most nursery rhymes and I can recite the content of a couple of kid’s books when woken at 3am.   I also know that you need more than twenty coins to buy a house.   My knowledge of current affairs these days comes from the bits of news I can gather on the radio in the morning in between getting my brood dressed for school and most of their teeth brushed.   I also need to get myself dressed and hair blow dried, lunches packed and the like in a very limited amount of time.   Getting kids dressed really is an ungrateful job and if I do not check underneath all the winter’s clothes, I fetch Liam at school in the afternoons and see the oddest thing...

I might not burn my bra just yet...

Anyone that has ever decided to move to another country will probably tell you that it is an emotional roller coaster ride of note.  The one minute you are all happy and thinking of new things and the adventure, the next you think of something sad, someone that you will miss dearly or a place where you spent some good times, so yes, I am up and down.  It is Christmas time again, Boney M is playing in the stores, the stockings are up, yet I have not managed to buy a single thing!  I am just not feeling Christmas at all this year.  It might be the totally crappy weather that we are experiencing at the moment, not sure. Reality is that this has been a long and hard year, so much happened, I was pregnant this year, Luka is 8 months old, we decided to move to Sydney, we have been working really hard, we gave away our cat, sold our furniture through it all, we did not manage a vacation at all!  So I think exhaustion (mental and physical) is at pla...
