Sydney, week 2

I have again been a bad blogger, and yes, I know I am a stay at home mommy, but somehow time just flies and before you know it, another week has come and gone. Today marks our two week anniversary in Sydney, two weeks, and I think we are getting better with this.  A brief overview of our week thus far, we both went to see personnel agents in the Sydney CBD.  Even more surprising, we used public transport to get there.  We were on time, it was no effort, we are getting used to it now.

We spent Sunday using public transport as well,  family discount applies on Sundays and you can use unlimited busses, ferries and trains for $2,50 a person. We went to the Opera House at Liam's request. We ate ice cream, we walked the streets of Sydney, we had a lovely family fun day.

Househunting has been a bit of a bore and property in Sydney seems overpriced to say the least.  So we decided to stay on a bit longer where we are now, not ideal as I am dying to get settled somewhere and to go shopping of course, but hey, this way we can still decide on neighborhoods before we commit.

The kids are cute, and I managed not to kill them thus far.  I really miss my support structure at home but this is a way of life.

I love cleaning, so that has not been a real issue, however laundry, and ironing...lets just say we are a tad on the crinkled side.  I iron sporadically as and when we go for interviews.

Liam and Luka love the beach and we have become beach bums, frequenting our local beach.  Luka eats handfuls of sand, Liam is starting to look like a surfer-boy.  We bought a liter of sunblock, the Australian sun is rather scary.

Fish and chips is delicious...coffee is amazing!  All in all, we are loving Sydney and the efficiency.  I ordered crocs (don't judge ok) online on Monday, on Wednesday the shoes in question were delivered...imagine that.

We applied for tax file numbers online, we received these in the post in a matter of days...bank officials, friendly, government workers, friendly and efficient.  The shock and horror.

So yes, I miss my friends and family a lot, but we just have so much to be thankful for right now, and we are giving this the best go that we can.

Bye from Sydney

I had a stunning Louis Vuiton Bag

I love handbags, I am crazy about them, I would forgo food for a good handbag.  Everybody has a 'thing' and mine simply happens to be handbags.  Big ones, small ones, madly expensive ones and el cheapos that you get at the flea market, grey ones hand crafted by old ladies at the old age home, shiny metally ones.  I love handbags. Well guess what?  No, not that Guess, not as in the handbag...I now have a diaper bag.  A red one, and it needs to double as my handbag.  There is just no way in hell that I can manage a two (almost three!) year old, a two week old, a diaper bag and a handbag, something had to give and in this case, it was my poor almost new chunky Louis Vuiton bag.  I miss it already... The thing is, when you have a baby, some things are just not meant to be. At least this time around, I have managed to paint my nails (all of them, fingers and toes) twice, and I have worn make up on at least four separate occasions.  With Liam a...

Liam and growing up

It struck me about five minutes ago how fast Liam has grown up since I fell pregnant with Luka.  Let me use an example, Gerhard had to leave the house really early this morning to go and play golf.  Liam is still a bit phlegmy, so he is still nebulised morning and evening - Gerhard's job.  Refer to previous posts about pregnancy paranoia and you will clearly understand that there is just no way in hell that I can nebulise Liam. So this morning the two of us eat our breakfast and then its time to nebulize, and I tell Liam he will just have to do this on his own, poor thing.  So there is my two year old boy sitting on the couch nebulising himself, my heart actually broke into pieces. He also got his very first set of golf clubs yesterday, not the plastic variety but mini golf clubs in a proper bag.  He is just so chuffed with himself!  He actually called his Oupa Hansie yesterday to show him his golf clubs (over the phone yes).  He could not con...

On the eve of my first protest

It is the eve of my first ever protest about anything really.  I am a little scared, a little excited, a little apprehensive but extremely motivated.  For those not following South African politics, our President last week fired our honest Minister of Finance and the South African economy took a tumble and we were downgraded to junk status by ratings agencies. Economic and political uncertainty ensued all because of one man’s greed and corruption.  Junk status has dire implications for our country and as always the people who will be most affected are the poorest of the poor.  Interest rates will rise, so will inflation and food prices, jobs will be lost, the list of horrible things goes on. Ordinary South Africans have now had enough and for the first time ever people from all walks of life are united behind a common cause, to save South Africa.  I have never in my 40 years on this earth been moved by any cause, not enough to actually take...
