Liam is at work with me today

Tomorrow is yet another public holiday in South Africa and as these things happen, the schools decided that today is a school holiday.  As if it is not enough that we have loads of public holidays, weeks on end of school holidays, we have ad hoc school holidays too.  Bliss.  And without realising what I was in for, I gave Sekai a week off, so she is in Zimbabwe, unaware of the fact that Liam's school is closed for the day.

Well, Gerhard and I decided to take leave and go away for the weekend, but we left it a tad on the late side, and could not find anything, so I decided I am not wasting an entire day's leave, to heck with it, I am bringing Liam to work with me.

A teeny tiny part of me is wondering why on earth I volunteered, the entire floor of my (usually pristine) office is covered in sticky sugar, the remnants from a packet of jelly tots eaten at 9 am.  Liam is picking his nose, my floor is littered with website printouts of dinosaurs, I coloured an ultrasuarus, Liam, a T-Rex.

Lunch will be something oily and unhealthy from the canteen, think chips and toasted ham and cheese.  Maybe I will throw in a milkshake for good measure.

Work wise, did I get anything done thus far, well, I had a meeting (thank heavens a colleague).  Liam was watching a movie on my computer, dropping his jelly tots on the floor and telling this man that it is about to snow, in his bestest english.  The meeting was also interrupted by a bathroom break...nice.

As for poor Luka, well her school is open today, so she went to school, there is just seriously no way in hell that I will cope with both kids at my office at the same time.

Add to this the fact that Liam is the baker at school on Friday, so on Thursday afternoon we will be making or making something.  Next week is my turn to decorate the fantasy corner in Liam's class, the theme, reptiles.  Goody, lucky me.  It is at times like these that I envy the stay at home mom, yes, it is still hard work, but at least you should in theory have more time to spend on baking and fantasy corners, heck, it is a stay at home mommy that decided the fantasy corner needs themed decorating in any event...

Good times, noodle salad...

I had a stunning Louis Vuiton Bag

I love handbags, I am crazy about them, I would forgo food for a good handbag.  Everybody has a 'thing' and mine simply happens to be handbags.  Big ones, small ones, madly expensive ones and el cheapos that you get at the flea market, grey ones hand crafted by old ladies at the old age home, shiny metally ones.  I love handbags. Well guess what?  No, not that Guess, not as in the handbag...I now have a diaper bag.  A red one, and it needs to double as my handbag.  There is just no way in hell that I can manage a two (almost three!) year old, a two week old, a diaper bag and a handbag, something had to give and in this case, it was my poor almost new chunky Louis Vuiton bag.  I miss it already... The thing is, when you have a baby, some things are just not meant to be. At least this time around, I have managed to paint my nails (all of them, fingers and toes) twice, and I have worn make up on at least four separate occasions.  With Liam a...

On the eve of my first protest

It is the eve of my first ever protest about anything really.  I am a little scared, a little excited, a little apprehensive but extremely motivated.  For those not following South African politics, our President last week fired our honest Minister of Finance and the South African economy took a tumble and we were downgraded to junk status by ratings agencies. Economic and political uncertainty ensued all because of one man’s greed and corruption.  Junk status has dire implications for our country and as always the people who will be most affected are the poorest of the poor.  Interest rates will rise, so will inflation and food prices, jobs will be lost, the list of horrible things goes on. Ordinary South Africans have now had enough and for the first time ever people from all walks of life are united behind a common cause, to save South Africa.  I have never in my 40 years on this earth been moved by any cause, not enough to actually take...

Liam and growing up

It struck me about five minutes ago how fast Liam has grown up since I fell pregnant with Luka.  Let me use an example, Gerhard had to leave the house really early this morning to go and play golf.  Liam is still a bit phlegmy, so he is still nebulised morning and evening - Gerhard's job.  Refer to previous posts about pregnancy paranoia and you will clearly understand that there is just no way in hell that I can nebulise Liam. So this morning the two of us eat our breakfast and then its time to nebulize, and I tell Liam he will just have to do this on his own, poor thing.  So there is my two year old boy sitting on the couch nebulising himself, my heart actually broke into pieces. He also got his very first set of golf clubs yesterday, not the plastic variety but mini golf clubs in a proper bag.  He is just so chuffed with himself!  He actually called his Oupa Hansie yesterday to show him his golf clubs (over the phone yes).  He could not con...
